We know, it’s a bit odd to see the Jawbone name attached to something other than a Bluetooth headset or speaker, but Aliph is forging into the application game with a new voice messaging service for iOS. Called Thoughts, the software is basically like text messaging or instant messaging with voice. The free audio-based messaging iPhone app, which should be hitting the App Store today, lets you send short audio recordings to either a single contact or a group with a tap of a button. We got a chance to check it out at the D: Dive into Mobile conference this week and found the whole thing to be a really great way to circumvent voicemails or longer texts — all you have to do is tap the name of your contact and then leave a short voice message. There’s absolutely no ringing or waiting. If and when that contact responds it appears as a threaded message, and if you’re in an area that isn’t conducive to listening to those thrilling messages, there’s also a transcription feature. The app should be hitting today, but if you need more details before tapping install, hit the break for the full press release and a short promo video.

Google Cloud Print hands-on

Google Cloud Print just launched, and we’re glad to announce… it works! At least from the Chrome test page.

Google are expected to launch cloud print-enabled Android apps later today, which will mean you can print from your phone direct to your printer — or indeed any printer that’s connected to Google Cloud Print.

The gallery should walk you through each of the steps. It took a while for the document to be printed (a few minutes) but it did eventually print — that could merely be a connection issue on my end, however.

Productivity apps constituted five of the top 10 iPad apps this year, according to Apple. Six of the 10 top-grossing iPad apps were also productivity apps. However, all the top 10 free iPad apps were information or entertain apps. The statistics were revealed in iTunes Rewind 2010, Apple’s summary of the hot trends for 2010, which lists the most popular apps for its various iOS platforms.

With all the Chrome OS and Chrome Web Store hoopla today, a post over at the Chromium blog went mostly unnoticed — and it’s definitely noteworthy. Freshly baked in the Chromium snapshot builds and Google Chrome Canary is Crankshaft, an enhancement to Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine that has yielded some impressive gains.

Crankshaft is made up of four components:

  • a runtime profiler for identifying code that uses a significant number of CPU cycles
  • a base compiler for generating code more quickly
  • an optimizing compiler which re-compiles code pinpointed by the profiler
  • deoptimization mechanism that allows Crankshaft to recover from overly-optimistic code optimizations

Crankshaft offers improvements in both startup time and maximum performance, with Google noting gains of up to 12% on JavaScript-heavy pages. On Google’s own V8 benchmark, Crankshaft helps Chrome post scores which are almost 50% higher than previous versions with V8 alone.

…And for those of you wondering when Chrome was going to hit version ten, you’ve got your answer. It’s already happened to the Canary build — so hit your wrench menu > About Google Chrome and restart to update yourself to Chrome X! There’s not much new that you’ll notice right off the bat, with the exception of a selectable Instant option and experimental geolocation features in about:flags.

Google Chrome Canary hits v10, Crankshaft turbocharges V8 JavaScript engine originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 20:46:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Droid X about screenEvo 4G about screen

Android 2.3 Gingerbread is out of the bag and eventually will make its way to phones. But many of you are still waiting on Froyo. And in the meantime, there can be a bit of confusion over which version of Android you’re actually running. The easy way to check is to press the menu button, then go to settings. The scroll down (it’s usually at the bottom) and choose "About phone." You should see a screen like the ones above. (Note that HTC phones may make you go deeper, into "Software Information."

What you’re looking for is "Android version." You should have Android 2.1-update 1, or Android 2.2, or Android 2.2.1. What you’re not looking for is "Software version." On the Droid X (which you see above on the left), it may be a bit confusing, because the software version is 2.3.xxx. But that doesn’t mean you’re running Android 2.3. (Sorry.) No, just look for the Android Version line and you’ll be all set.

PlayStation Phone runs Neocore — poorly — on video

 PlayStation Phone benchmarks

The guys over at Engadget just got their hands on a video showing off the Sony PlayStation Phone (aka the Zeus, Z1) running benchmark program Neocore. As you can see above, it didn’t fare so well, but keep in mind that this is prototype hardware and software. Sony seems to want gaming to be a main focus of the phone, so we fully expect the GPU to blow away benchmarks once the phone is finally released. Suffice to say, yes, it will run Angry Birds. Click past the break to see the video in action. [Engadget]

Chicken Powered Steadicam proves poultry has a future in Hollywood (video)

If you’ve decided to use a full-fledged Steadicam in your next indie blockbuster you’d better make sure you have the budget — they can run upwards of $45,000. Sure, there are cheaper options out there, some more sophisticated than others, but none are quite as amazing as this. It’s the Chicken Powered Steadicam from Pennywhistle Productions and it is, quite simply, a chicken with a camera on its head, making use of the bird’s stabilizing vestibulo-ocular reflex. In the video, embedded for your enjoyment below, you can see that version 1.0 didn’t go so well. So, our intrepid barnyard cinematographer quickly advances to version 2.0 — “a much bigger rooster.” While the video quality is low the effect is actually quite well done, but it’s the ending that really makes it all come together. Just watch the video, we won’t ruin the surprise.

Jing Pro GiveawayEarlier today I reviewed TechSmith’s latest and greatest screen capture and recording tool, Jing.

The free version is great — and it’s fantastic that the only branding is at the end of the video, not slathered all over it like most watermarks — but, as always, the pro version is better.

Pro enables a bunch of funky things: it removes branding from videos, enables MPEG-4 encoding, and it lets you upload directly to YouTube (very cool). It also lets you hook up your webcam, if you want to add a personal touch to your videos.

We have 20 Jing Pro licenses to give away — and to enter the draw, just post a comment. Full terms and conditions are after the break.

Aviary, the creators of a huge suite of online editing and creation tools, has just launched a rather suave HTML5 photo editor.

Citing its super-simplicity and embeddableness, Aviary seems to be rather proud of its new creation — and justifiably so. The editor, no doubt because of its slim feature set, is very quick to load. The interface is snappy, and none of the manipulations or photo filters seem to create any kind of ‘lag’. There aren’t many functions, mind you (but Aviary says more are coming).

The idea behind the new editor, according to Aviary, was to create a cut-down and customizable editor that could easily be embedded across the Web, on its partners’ websites. Of course, while you can just embed the editor, you could just take the code and install it on your own server — and hack some new functionality into it while you’re at it. That’s the joy of open HTML5 Web apps, folks! Pure HTML means that it will work on next-generation mobile browsers like Firefox for Android, too.

All in all, the Aviary HTML5 photo editor is nothing short of excellent. If you need to do a quick bit of editing and don’t want to play with a Flash editor that’s larger and more cumbersome than a rusty forklift truck, try out Aviary’s HTML5 editor.

Kinect controlling Windows 7

While hackers were quickly developing open-source drivers for Microsoft’s new, depth-sensing motion capturing Kinect, it seems like Microsoft has an official partner in the shape of Evoluce, the multi-touch gesture experts. In a video (after the break), you can see two people using Kinect and Windows 7 to rotate and zoom 3D models, paint on a canvas, and browse websites.

The video, for the most part, isn’t particularly impressive, but as always it’s a proof of very exciting concepts. Instead of two people playing with banal holiday snaps, imagine some kind of interface that can be manipulated by multiple people at the same time — a war game, perhaps. If you had Kinect on top of your computer monitor, you could lean back in your chair and surf sites with tiny hand gestures, rather than controlling a mouse or keyboard — sign me up!

The most exciting thing, though, is that — hopefully — the software won’t be too expensive. With an open-source driver in the wild, Evoluce can’t charge too much. It’s obviously in Microsoft’s benefit to sell Kinect directly to Windows 7 (and 8!) users, too, so the software might even be bundled!

Thinking that the not-yet-announced Samsung GT-i9020T (a.k.a. Nexus S) might be delayed due to a last minute addition of a dual-core processor, as recently seen in the seemingly similar i9100? Well, it’s looking like that possibility just got a lot less likely — the GT-i9020T has now turned up yet again at the FCC, with the only changes being a pair of new Bluetooth / WiFi and GPS antennas. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be any more changes, but it does give us a bit more confidence that a GT-i9020T model will actually be released… sometime.

[Thanks, John M.]

Hands-on video review of Office for Windows Phone 7

Posted: 29th November 2010 by aliceroddey in Uncategorized

If you weren’t aware, it’s impossible to take screenshots with Windows Phone 7. Perhaps once it’s rooted we’ll be able to — but until then, screenshotting apps for reviews is laborious — you have to take a photo of the screen — and the quality is inevitably low.

So, looking for an alternative, I decided to do a video review of Office for Windows Phone 7. It’s about 10 minutes long, and the video quality is excellent. You should be able to clearly see the text on the screen, and the audio commentary should be informative (and perhaps even funny).

In the video I step through the three key features of Office for WP7: OneNote (and its integration with SkyDrive); Word and Excel (viewing and editing); and SharePoint integration (though I sadly couldn’t get it to work). OneNote definitely stands out as one of WP7′s killer features, especially when combined with SkyDrive synchronization. Word and Excel, which lack the ability to sync, seem rather useless in comparison — but still, being able to view Word and Excel documents on the move is surely a good thing.

The video review is after the break.

Is there something in the air? Hot on the heels of Rupert Murdoch’s impending The Daily newspaper for the iPad, we’re getting word of a Richard Branson-funded, iPad-specific magazine dubbed Project. The magazine will cover entertainment, travel, business, design, and international culture. It’s hard to tell if these two announcements are somehow related to each other, or if they imply some sort of shift in Apple’s treatment of publications, but either way they do indeed seem to be happening. The full announcement of Project is due for Tuesday next week.

Check out this amazing kitchen appliance from Berlin-based designer Christoph Therard, a human-powered cabinet of mechanical wizardry which lats you crank normally electric-powered gadgets with nothing but your leg.
A machine like this needs a suitably cool name, and the R2B2 has one. The R2B2 works thusly: You hit pump the pedal and a big, heavy [...]

Windows Home Server 'Vail' drops drive extender support, MS suggests you just buy bigger HDDs

If you’re a current Windows Home Server user there’s a very good chance you’ve taken advantage of the drive pooling features of the OS. Need more storage? Pop in a new HDD, watch some lights blink for a bit, and then you’re ready to get back to downloading… whatever it is you’re downloading. Granted things didn’t always work perfectly, but this tech, formally called Drive Extender, makes adding storage easy, makes it possible to replicate only the data that needs it, and is completely hardware independent. And now it’s going away. Microsoft has confirmed that the next release of Windows Home Server, Vail (due in the first half of 2011), will not feature Drive Extender, indicating you’ll need to simply buy bigger drives and manually handle data replication or rely on RAID to make this happen, solutions that are decidedly less intuitive for non-techie users. The reaction among WHS fans has been overwhelmingly negative, with 148 comments (and counting) on the announcement post, most telling MS where it can shove its RAID controller. Feel free to keep on venting here if you like.

Update: Malcom dropped this link into comments, where Windows guru Paul Thurrott indicates the issue is related to MS trying to position this to the small business sector — that Drive Extender can’t keep up with more professional loads.

Scientists have been experimenting with muscles and technology to solve both human and robotic mobility issues for years. Now it looks as though researchers from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council have made a significant leap forward for paraplegics, thanks to a revolutionary microchip the team has dubbed “Active Book.” What’s notable about the chip is that it stimulates more muscle groups than existing technology without the need for external connections. This was accomplished via micro-packing and precision laser processing, which allowed tiny electrodes to be cut from platinum foil and rolled into a 3D book shape. These platinum foil “pages” close in around nerve roots, and are micro-welded to a hermetically sealed silicon chip. Once embedded into areas within the spinal canal, the chip can work to stimulate paralyzed muscles, implying patients could even “perform enough movement to carry out controlled exercise such as cycling or rowing.” A press release from the Council says the Active Book will begin trials sometime next year — we can’t wait to see the results.

Google Docs adds LaTeX support, customizable autocorrect

Posted: 25th November 2010 by aliceroddey in Uncategorized

The official Google Docs blog has announced a handful of new features, including LaTeX equation support, the option to place images in spreadsheet cells, and automatic corrections.

LaTeX is a fairly significant addition, since it should greatly improve Google Docs’ spreadsheet muscle. While that alone won’t pull it even with Excel, it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Image insertion is as also a nice addition, and it’s as simple as popping image=(URL) into a cell. You can also use Google Image search to insert files which are marked for re-use with modification.

Autocorrect is an extremely handy addition — especially since you can use it for more than fixing up typographical errors. Google allows you to add your own corrections, so you can also use Docs autocorrect as a text expander — to turn ffx into Firefox, for example. Pair autocorrect up with Google Scribe, and it won’t be long before Google just types your whole doc for you.

TeamViewer 6 for Android now available

Just last week, the Teamviewer 6 beta arrived for Windows users. With the arrival of my first Android device in the mail, I had hoped it wouldn’t be too long before the crew released a beta for Android — and today my waiting as at an end. Teamviewer is now available for installation on your Android device, and it’s a welcome addition to my remote support arsenal.

Functionality is every bit as good as the iOS version I looked at a while back — in fact, I even wrote part of this post on my Windows 7 laptop via my Droid using TeamViewer. Mouse control is smooth, zooming and changing the remote desktop’s screen resolution is a breeze, and the UI includes buttons for sending specials keys like Windows, control, and alt. It’s much easier to manage a 23″ inch desktop via a 4″ mobile screen than you would think using TeamViewer for Android.

We’ll have a full review once TeamViewer 6 becomes available in the Market. Check out additional images of the beta in action after the break!

Thanks to Sebastian for the screenshots — apparently I need to go have a quick shower.
